There was a prime minister during the Song Dynasty named Lü Mengzheng. He came from a very humble background but eventually rose to the position.
On his first day attending court, civil and military officials stood in two lines as Lü Mengzheng led the way toward the emperor. Someone in the line pointed at him and said, “This kind of person* also became prime minister?” (* disrespectful remark). Lü Mengzheng heard it but ignored it and continued walking.
Another official, angered by the remark, wanted to find out who had said it. Lü Mengzheng stopped him and said, “If I know the person’s name, I will remember it for the rest of my life. So I would rather not know.” Everyone admired his magnanimity.
Because Lü Mengzheng possessed such moral character, during his time in office the country was peaceful and the affairs of the state were well governed.
