Su Dongpo (1037-1101AD) was a renowned writer, calligrapher, and painter of the Northern Song Dynasty, he also served as Minister of War among other official positions.
Whilst serving in Guazhou, north of the Yangtze River, Su Dongpo formed a deep friendship with the eminent monk, Zen master Fo Yin of Jinshan Temple, situated on the opposite bank. One day, feeling that he had made progress in his spiritual cultivation, Su Dongpo composed a verse which essentially means:
I bow to the Buddha, whose light illuminates the entire cosmos. I have reached a state where the “Eight Winds” cannot sway my mind, as serene as the Buddha sitting on a lotus throne.
The ‘Eight Winds’ refer to the eight worldly circumstances capable of unsettling the mind: Good fortune, misfortune, pain, joy, commendation, mockery, defamation, and acclaim.
Su Dongpo was very pleased with this poem and had it sent across the river to Fo Yin, wishing for his endorsement. After reading it, Fo Yin wrote on the paper: “放屁” (literally “to fart”, here means “bullshit”) and had it sent back.
Su Dongpo, expecting praise, flew into a rage upon seeing the reply, and immediately crossed the river to confront the monk Fo Yin. Upon arriving at Jinshan Temple, he found the meditation hall closed, with a note on the door that read, “Unmoved by the Eight Winds, yet blown across the river by a fart.” Only then did Su Dongpo realise his mistake and feel deeply ashamed.
#15 八风吹不动，一屁打过江
苏东坡 (1037年-1101年) 是北宋著名文学家、书法家、画家，曾任兵部尚书等职。
苏东坡在江北瓜州任职时，与一江之隔的金山寺高僧佛印禅师交情深厚。一日，苏东坡自觉修心有所得，便写了一首偈子：
稽首天中天，毫光照大千。
八风吹不动，端坐紫金莲。
这首偈子大意是：我顶礼佛陀，佛光普照大千世界。我修到了“八风”都吹不动心念的境界，如同佛陀端坐莲花座一般安稳。
“八风” 指的是世间八种能撼动人心的境遇：利、衰、苦、乐、称、讥、毁、誉（顺利、失意、痛苦、快乐、称赞、讥讽、毁谤、荣誉）。
苏东坡对这首诗很得意，派人过江送给佛印印证。佛印看后，一言不发，只在纸上批了两个字：“放屁”，让人带回。
苏苏东坡本以为会得到赞赏，见到“放屁”二字，顿时火冒三丈，立刻亲自过江找佛印理论。到了金山寺，却见禅堂禁闭，门上贴一张纸条，写的是“八风吹不动，一屁打过江”。 苏东坡到此才恍然大悟，惭愧不已。
